The Chicago Botanic Park explored methods to prevent wild deer from entering the park and consuming the plants and flowers. Ohio Gratings, Inc. developed “deer guard” heavy duty steel grating which was installed at the north and south vehicle entrances. The deer guard grating performs similar to a cattle guard. The grating has diagonal openings between the bearing bars and is spaced fairly open. The deer are afraid to step in the large openings over the span of the grates which is installed over a shallow pit. The grates were designed to accommodate heavy vehicle loads, and manufactured from corrosion resistant galvanized steel with slip resistant surface applied.
