Due to licensing requirements for a
hydroelectric power plant, the operating agency was required to
provide passage for salmon to historic habitat in the upper Lewis Reservoir in rural southwest Washington State. To meet the licensing requirements, a floating surface collector (FSC) and access trestle was constructed to serve as a downstream fish passage facility. The FSC is moored to a 185’ tall mooring tower. Access to the mooring tower is provided via an approximately 650’ long multi-span trestle.
The remote installation site required off-site prefabrication through modularization, which reduced expensive on-site assembly work.
Ohio Gratings’ heavy-duty riveted bridge decking was the perfect match for use on the large access trestle. The project required grating which would be capable of supporting heavy vehicle loads, including H20. Our 37R5 Lite, 5” x ¼” riveted grating met the loading requirements while providing a product that was lighter in weight/SF to make handling and installation easier. Grating was supplied in 46-3/8” wide x 16’long panels for attachment to the span sections.
Heavy duty anchor blocks were shop welded to the grating, avoiding the need to field weld the grating to the support beams. Support steel was shop drilled during prefabrication. Once the prefabricated span sections were installed, the grating was simply bolted into place. Additionally, the heavy duty riveted grating panels were load banded at the panel ends for additional strength.
Ohio Gratings, Inc. shipped 6 truckloads of material over a 2 month period to complete this project.
