The existing Bus Bulb areas along Broadway in lower Manhattan did not allow adequate space for the wheelchair access system on the buses to operate. A barrier fence needed to be removed and the gap between the sidewalk and the bus bulb needed to be bridged. Since the elevation of the bus bulb above the sidewalk varied along its length, the grating system needed to accommodate the changes in elevation thus providing a safe step system for pedestrians. The grating needed to be ADA compliant and rated for AASHTO HS20 wheel loads. The designers also wanted to provide seating along the bus bulb for the convenience of riders. Ohio Gratings worked with the Engineers at HDR and the Designers at Billings Jackson to adapt the Wheels n’ Heels® InVent® grating as a key element in the project. A special rubber block support system was developed to fit the elevation changes while protecting the historical granite curbing. The photos show the before and after conditions.
