LEED (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED is a third-party certification program and is affiliated with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green building. They give building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their building s performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

"The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a 501 (c)(3) non profit composed of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings and communities that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work."

Environmental and financial benefits to earning LEED credits.

Environmental and financial benefits to earning LEED Credits by using Ohio Gratings Green Product building materials:

  • Lowers operating costs and increases asset value
  • Reduces waste sent to landfills
  • Conserves energy and water
  • Healthier and safer for occupants
  • Reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions
  • Qualifies for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives in many cities
  • Demonstrates an owner's commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility

If your building project is a candidate for LEED Credits, review our LEED Rating System Checklist below. Your project is a viable candidate for certification if it meets all prerequisites and can achieve the minimum number of points necessary to earn the credits.

LEED Credit and Sub-Credit Potential Points LEED Requirements OGi Products
Sustainable Sites
Credit 7.2. Heat Island Effect - Roof: Reduce heat islands to minimize impact on microclimate, human and wildlife habitat. 1 Use roofing materials having Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) equal to or greater than 78 for a minimum of 75% of the roof surface. Install a vegetated roof for at least 50% of the roof area. Architectural Sunshades, Trellises, ADA Walking Surfaces
Credit 8 Light Pollution Reduction: Minimize light trespass from the building and site, reduce sky-glow to increase night sky access, improve night-time visibility through glare reduction, and reduce development impact on nocturnal environments. 1 The angle of maximum candela from each interior luminaire as located in the building shall intersect opaque building interior surfaces and not exit out through windows or openings in structure. LG100 Aluminum Louver Grille
Energy & Atmosphere
Credit 1. Optimizing Energy Performance: Achieve increasing levels of energy performance above the prerequisite standard to reduce environmental Impact associated with excessive energy use. 1 to 10 Demonstrate a percentage of improvement in the building performance rating compared to the baseline building performance rating for energy systems per ASHRAE / IESNA Standard 90.1-2004 as demonstrated by Section 11 of that Standard. Architectural Sunshades, Grilles
Materials & Resources
Credit 4.1 Recycled Content (Specify 10%): Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials. 1 Use materials recycled content such that the sum of the pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content constitutes at least 10% of the total value of the materials in the project. Architectural Sunshades, Grilles, Ornamental Fencing
Credit 4.2 Recycled Content (Specify 20%): Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials. (4.1) + 1 Use materials recycled content such that the sum of the pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content constitutes at least 20% of the total value of the materials in the project. Architectural Sunshades, Grilles, Ornamental Fencing
Credit 5.1 Regional Materials: 10% Extracted Processed & Manufactured Regionally: Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region thereby supporting the regional economy and reducing the environmental impact resulting from transportation. 1 Use building materials or products that have been extracted harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% of the total material value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage shall contribute to the regional value. Architectural Sunshades, Grilles, Ornamental Fencing
Credit 5.2 Regional Materials: 20% Extracted Processed & Manufactured Regionally: Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region thereby supporting the regional economy and reducing the environmental impact resulting from transportation. 1 to 10 Use building materials or products that have been extracted harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 20% of the total material value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage shall contribute to the regional value. Architectural Sunshades, Grilles, Ornamental Fencing
Indoor Environmental Air Quality
8.1 Daylight and Views (Daylight 75% of Spaces): Provide for the building occupants with a connection between indoor spaces and the outdoors through the introduction of daylight and views into the regularly occupied areas of the building. 1 Achieve minimum glazing factor of 2% in a minimum of 75% of all regularly occupied areas used for visual tasks. Some low occupancy support areas are excluded. Architectural Sunshades
Innovation & Design Process
Credit 1-1.4 Innovation in Design: Provide design teams and projects the opportunity to be awarded points for exceptional performance above the requirements set by the LEED for New Construction Green Building Rating System and / or innovative performance in Green Building categories not 1 to 4 In writing, identify the intent of the proposed innovation credit, the proposed requirement for compliance, the proposed submittals to demonstrate compliance, and the design approach (strategies) that might be used to meet the requirements. Summary
The LEED Program has gained popularity and recognition over the past several years and has become the premier sustainability design tool in the building industry. LEED focuses on the constuction of buildings that have minimal impact on the environment during construction, occupation and reclamation. LEED recognizes that utilizing recycled materials is an important part of minimizing environmental impact. This recognition is the driving force for using OGi products. The relatively high percentage of recycled aluminum in our products ensures that our products can provide a significant contribution to earning LEED Points. In addition, our multiple fabrication facilities provide regional manufacturing centers that decrease transportation costs and related fuel consumption and help to enhance local economies, both of which are deemed environmentally preferable in LEED documentation.
